Snowshoe hare on Mt Clay

Remember our motto:                   you don't know   unless you go...   and it's always better than you think...

March 29th   Yesterday was a really great last day for us at Pico, we will miss closing weekend for Easter, if you can make it, it will be well worth it! Just like last year the mountain will be closing with HUGE depths of snow and full cover top to bottom on all ski trails... even Giant Killer is still open, and full width of the Upper Pike, the skinning up to earn your turns will be the best ever this spring! Killington will be going strong well into May, we haven't heard any closing dates planned. They have built up a record amount of snow on Superstar so that should be good for another 2 months! Royal Flush is the only thing I've heard is washed out, and it's always the first to go, and the woods of course are rotten now and pretty well beat, everything else is going strong. It's been FROZEN granular for 2 weeks since those last 50 degree days so nothing has melted out, we have had some HARD mid winter conditions with a trace of corn snow here and there. Last Wed. the basin was freezing cold with a northwest wind and we had to spend the day at Bear just to get an edge into anything. We rallied and had a great day anyway but there wasn't anything 'Spring' about it, I wore my down jacket. Pico was much 'friendlier' Sunday as it often is with and inch or so of edgeable frozen corn and at least enough sun to warm us up on the lift and make us feel like Spring is here! Get out and get the best of it in the next three weeks because it will only deteriorate from then on and get deep and bumpy.

Word is Mt Washington and Mt Clay are 'PHAT' !! Several friends... 3 different groups, got over to do some 'Westside' trips the friday and saturday before last and had good corn snow for the skis down Monroe and Ammonoosuc. The west wind was horrific for the climb/skin up and there were some "interesting" crossings up top being a marginally warm enough day to be up there yet. But everything is FULL and in great shape. Below are some shots taken of the 'Big Mountain' in March. It's READY for a great spring season as soon as we get some days of Sunny and 60 degrees!

March 18th   What an awesome couple of weeks of early spring skiing. Warm temps at 50 degrees, bluebird days and soft corn snow. So great! Peter and I went up  to Sugarbush for the day on wednesday and had the best time. The day was sunny and warm and the skiing was fantastic! We had a picnic lunch from the Warren Store at the top, with a view that can't be beat. I thought Pico had the best view....but from the Bush... we saw Mt Washington and the Franconia Range so much closer and in it's glory. Camel's Hump and Mt Mansfield lookin' so cool right next door, miles of open water on Lake Champlain and the High Peaks in Adirondacks just across the valley, and even Pico and Killington clear as day to the south. It was spectacular! I couldn't get enough of it. What a great day we had! Moss Glen Falls in Granville Gulf was beautiful for a roadside stop. If you get a chance to get up there before the end of the year we highly recommend it!

March 13th & 14   Mad River Tele Fest was last weekend! Dickie Hall's biggest Tele Party in the East. A great time was had by all. The usual suspects had a 'rockin' good time at the dance party Saturday night and more fun than any adults should have at the retro ski on sunday in 80's gear and clothing.

March 10, 2010   Below are a couple of pictures from Italy that are so cool I had to share them. People send us shots occassionally from places theyv'e been, but this is one of the most spectacular we've ever seen. Can you imagine! Sent to us by our Black Diamond Rep Tyler, who lives up in Richmond, VT. He just got back from a guided trip to Italy. Here's his quick note.

Just got back from my ski trip.  Unbelievable.  The best and steepest couloirs I have ever skied.  Also climbed and skied mont rosa in a day (summited at 15,000ft and ski descended 12,000ft back to the valley floor).  Didn’t get out unscathed though, as I have pretty good frostbite all over my face and on most of my toes.  Will send along some pics when I get them.

March 2010       The weather has been sunny and beautiful. Wish you were here. We have been getting a couple of weeks of glorious sun and cold enough temps to keep the 58" the mountains got two weeks ago from melting an inch. Snow pack is still huge, with a minimal amount of changes. Today may get warm enough for some nice spring corn. We have had some of the best skiing of the season at Pico on the weekends, and Killington has had an exceptional week as well. We heard Ovation and Outer Limits have been great. Everything is great right now.

Skiing has been really good on piste and off. Sunday I skiied Pico with a really fun bunch of friends. Everything from Pike to KA, Sunset to Summit and Birch Glades were all great. Summit Glades was bumped up and really got the heart beating, but a fun challange with plenty of fresh velvet on top.. Two of my favorites are Birch woods and Sunset Shuss. Love those trails. We had a great day! Peter and Mark ventured further and had an epic morning in the woods, below are some shots of the fresh pow they found when the rest of us were skiing groomers. Those lucky ducks...they had to work for it, but got the goods! I had to open that day because Peter and Mark were late getting back...mmm   I can see why! ya hoo!

Take a left at the big birch, and a right at the 3 pines... and it's UPHILL from there! Skinnin' that is... no lifts here... Mark B.   Sunday 2/21/10   Pico Mountain

Feb Ski Show, 2010

Peter and I went to Providence, RI to the annual NE Ski Show to see next years products. We got to see all the new stuff which is always a treat. Cool new skis and boots. Big changes in Black Diamond skis, but none in boots. Big changes in Garmont boots, Syner-G's, Venus' and Ener-G's are gone. Scarpa T1's and T2 Eco's remain the same. New skis and graphics for G3 and K2. Freschi Freeride and G3 Onyx AT bindings and most AT boots are updated. Karhu backcountry skis, the XCDGT, 10th Mtn and Guide are gone forever!  :(   Although the molds were bought by Madshus who have a great nordic reputation and the same skis with the same base will be available under a new name and graphic...phew! Lots of changes and price increases so you might want to take advantage of this years sales on equipment. Our Clothing orders with Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Isis for Women, and Cloudveil are done and in for next year. It's a crazy business with orders due for the next season long before your sell through and profit is made in the current one. Due dates and shows are earlier and earlier each year. The times, they are a changing. We have become rare birds in the industry with our specialty niche of "Telemark, Alpine Touring and Backcountry skiing". We have the equipment, parts and the service!  Have fun outdoors!  Cheers!

Family fun...

Peter and Mike getting a great day in on the Big Mountain. They hiked Mt Washington via Amonoosic Ravine and skied Oaks Gulf, hiked across the top and skied Monroe Brook down.

Peter took this from the top of Catwalk    great shot! of a favorite spot!
